This page explains what happens to information about you when you use xtendedview.com. We keep it short on purpose: the site runs no display ads, sells no data and has no mailing list, so there is less to explain than on most websites.
XtendedView is run by its founder, Tushar Thakur. Anything about this policy or your data: email tushar@xtendedview.com.
Reading an article
Opening any page sends the usual technical details from your browser: your IP address, browser and device type, the address of the page, and the page that linked you here. These services handle that visit for us:
| Service | Why we use it | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Hostinger | Hosts the site on servers in the United States | Each request, including your IP address, in server logs |
| Cloudflare | Delivers pages faster and blocks malicious traffic; its Web Analytics beacon counts visits without cookies | Each request, including your IP address |
| MalCare | Security firewall and malware scanning | Request details, including IP address, when it screens traffic for attacks |
| Google Analytics 4, added through MonsterInsights | Shows which articles are read and how readers find them | A random identifier stored in cookies, pages viewed, approximate location and device details. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses |
| Ahrefs Web Analytics | A second, cookie-free traffic count | Page views and referring pages, without cookies |
| Google Fonts | Supplies the typefaces the site uses | Your IP address when the font files load |
The view counter shown on articles is a number kept in our own database. Your browser may store a small note in local storage so the same visit isn’t counted twice; it never leaves your device.
Commenting
The comment form asks for a name and email address, with a website as an option. We store those along with your comment, your IP address, your browser’s user agent and the time you posted. We use them to moderate comments and keep spam out. Spam filtering is handled by Antispam Bee, locally on the XtendedView server, so nothing goes to an outside service. Your email address is never published.
To show profile pictures, WordPress turns your email address into a scrambled string (a hash) and asks Gravatar, a service run by Automattic, whether a picture exists for it. Gravatar’s own privacy policy applies to that lookup.
If you tick the box to remember your details, your browser keeps your name, email and website in cookies for about a year so you don’t have to type them again. Published comments stay up until we or you ask for them to be removed.
Emailing us
Our email runs on Google’s Gmail service. We keep messages for as long as we need them to answer you and to keep a record of the conversation, and we never add your address to a list.
Cookies, in full
- _ga and _ga_75PYDPPLWE: set by Google Analytics to tell visits apart. They last up to two years.
- Comment cookies: only if you choose to save your details, as described above.
- Login cookies: only for our own staff when they sign in to edit the site.
Your browser lets you refuse cookies or wipe existing ones, and Google offers a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics on every site.
Other websites, embeds and share buttons
Articles link to sources and other sites. Once you follow a link, that site’s privacy policy applies, not ours. Some articles may embed content such as a video; an embed behaves the same way a direct visit to its home site would, and that site can collect data accordingly. The social buttons on our pages are plain links: nothing is sent to Facebook, X, LinkedIn or Pinterest unless you click one.
How long we keep things
- Google Analytics data: 14 months, the retention period set in our account.
- Server and security logs: for the periods set by Hostinger, Cloudflare and MalCare.
- Comments: for as long as they are published, plus spam records kept by Antispam Bee for filtering.
- Emails: for as long as the conversation is useful to answer you or keep a record.
What you can ask us to do
Wherever you live, you can email us for a copy of the information we have on you, ask for it to be fixed, or have it erased, including any comment you posted. You’ll hear back within 30 days.
Readers in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom have these rights under the GDPR, plus the right to object to processing and to file a complaint with the data protection regulator where they live. We rely on legitimate interests to run, secure and measure the site, and on your request when we handle a comment or an email.
For California and other US states with privacy statutes: XtendedView never sells personal information, and it isn’t passed to anyone for targeted advertising.
Where your data goes
Our server sits in a US data centre. Google, Cloudflare, Gravatar and our other providers may handle data in America or elsewhere, and each relies on its own safeguards for moving it between countries.
Younger readers
XtendedView is written for adults and isn’t meant for anyone under 13. If a child has sent us personal details, let us know and we’ll erase them.
