Compared to its predecessors, Windows 10 does not have many bugs as an Operating System. It allows you to enjoy the perfect PC experience without actually worrying about errors and Blue Screen situations. That having said, there still are some things you should care about while using Windows 10. Mouse Lags are one of them. In this article, we will be talking about different types of mouse-lag errors and some effective ways to fix them. First, we will check out the different types of mouse lag errors in Windows. We will start with a few common ones.
Different Types of Mouse Lag Errors
Depending on the situation and the user-case scenario, the following types of mouse lag errors may appear during the Windows 10 experience.
- During Gameplay: Windows 10 is shown to have mouse lag when users are playing games. This will make it extremely tough to employ good enough gameplay, especially if you’re playing competitive.
- Mouse Freezing: In this case, the mouse would freeze without prior notice and the computer would become practically unusable. This might happen spontaneously or when launching new programs.
- Wireless Mouse Lag: This is common when you are using a wireless or Bluetooth-powered mouse with Windows 10. This can easily be fixed, though.
- Mouse Stutter is also commonly seen in the Windows environment. In this, however, the pointer is not completely frozen but would be lagging behind the actual movement of the mouse.
We will suggest you a number of solutions to address these issues. If one method does not work, the other would definitely work. So, it would be great if you don’t give up after one attempt.
#1 Re-Install Mouse Drivers
Most of the issues with mouse lag are caused by driver issues. Drivers are software components that enable a smooth sync of hardware and software. Problems with driver software can cause mouse lag among other issues. So, the best idea is to try re-installing the mouse drivers. To do that, you can follow these steps:
- First, you have to press the Windows Key + X and choose Device Manager from the upcoming menu
- In the next screen, you can see a huge list of devices that are connected to your device. You have to spot the mouse that is behaving unusually.
- You have to right-click on the mouse driver and it would open a new window. There, choose the tab named Driver and pick Uninstall Driver from the options.
- Now, you have to confirm that you need to uninstall the drivers. Press Yes to proceed.
- The system would now ask you to re-start the computer. Once you restart, Windows 10 would install the mouse drivers automatically.
This process should be enough to solve most of the issues causing mouse lag.
#2 Update Mouse Driver
In this case, an older version of the driver software could be causing the issue. The solution here is to update the software straightforward. The steps are:
- Follow the same steps we followed above until you reach the Device Manager
- Now, right click on the driver software button and choose Update Driver
- Depending on the system and manufacturer, further processes may vary and may take up to a few minutes. Once you are done, however, you will be ready to roll.
This can help you if you are running an older computer with outdated hardware.
#3 Rolling Back/Downgrading Driver Software
There are times when the latest release of the driver software is not the best. In those instances, it makes a lot of sense to roll back to the previous version.
- You have to open Device Manager, choose the Mouse component and double-click on the driver.
- From the options you can see, click on Roll-back Driver
- Now, Windows 10 would ask you why you are rolling back the drivers. You can proceed by choosing any of the given options.
Once again, the process may take a few minutes, but your mouse would be functional by the time you do this.
#4 Check Other USB Devices
If you have connected the mouse using USB, other USB devices connected to your computer could be making some interference to the mouse. This could also be the reason why there is a lag in activity. To prevent this, you can try a bunch of options.
- You can try removing and re-connecting the other USB devices in the computer. Also, do make sure that you try using the mouse when other devices are not connected. If the problem is solved when no device is connected, you have the answer.
- If you have connected the device using Bluetooth, you can try removing and re-pairing the device with your computer. This would remove most of the issues.
The Bottom Line
These are the most effective ways to fix mouse lag in Windows 10. It’s great that the OS now lets you access devices and drivers with improved ease. Do you know any other ways to fix the issues? Do let us know in the comments section.

My issue was a faulty mouse scrolling wheel. I need to replace my mouse for that.

When I had ps2 mouse I use to have a very similar issue in my system. But now I have replaced the mouse with USB, none of these issues so far. I am loving it.
Tushar Thakur says
Glad to know it resolved Mary but in my knowledge, it has nothing to do with PS2 or USB mouse. There might be some other hardware issue in your old mouse that might had caused lagging.
