We’re not just talking about lab coats and spending hours behind a computer coding when we talk about STEM. It involves so much more. STEM education refers to the learning of the subjects science, technology, engineering and maths. It’s usually taught through hands-on and real-world learning experiences.

Involved in the processes that keep manufacturing, food production, heath care and wide range of other industries ticking along, are the younger generations getting enough exposure to these essential skills?

The importance of STEM education

Simply put, it’s important because most of the world depends on it. Both the economy and our general well-being are all backed by science, technology, engineering and maths. When you start work for the day you’re using technology. When you head to the doctors for a check-up you’re relying on science to determine what the problem is. STEM education is all around us, from the moment we wake up, to the second we fall asleep.

STEM education can be taught in two ways, both in the classroom and then also in terms of you, me, parents and teachers. It’s important that we all become more educated on the overall importance of STEM.

How can we encourage kids to study STEM?

Teaching STEM education early on is crucial. It will help to develop future generations and give them a more enhanced interest in these vital subjects. There are many different ways we can introduce the younger generations to them too. For example, many companies offer online lessons to promote STEM subjects that you could stream in the classroom, or even ask students to watch these as part of their homework.

No matter whether they show an interest in science, technology, engineering or maths, there are a wealth of platforms and information out there to help you inspire and educate.

STEM jobs will always be here

Whether you’re working in careers or are trying to encourage the workers of tomorrow to try different paths, it’s important to highlight that STEM jobs are likely to always have a place in the economy. With technology and science constantly advancing, engineers needed to build things such as space shuttles and maths required to role it all together, these careers are a sure fire way of setting yourself up for life.

Inspiring the next generation young is a great way to ensure these fruitful careers will be filled with bright and eager people.
